Hearing therapy and tinnitus management

What is hearing therapy?
Hearing therapy can help with the rehabilitation of people with hearing loss, tinnitus and / or communication difficulties. The hearing therapist will help optimise hearing aid use and provide strategies to improve communication skills. In addition, the hearing therapist can help people manage their tinnitus more effectively by providing advice and support.
How can the hearing therapist help with tinnitus?
Our hearing therapist recognises that one size does not fit all and therefore we take an holistic, patient centred approach with an eclectic mix of therapies. Possible treatment options include sound therapy, relaxation training and advice on diet and lifestyle. Our hearing therapist is trained in a variety of psychological techniques, including cognitive behavioural therapy and brief solution-focused therapy.
What will happen at the tinnitus management appointment?
There will be a full patient assessment at the initial appointment which normally takes about one hour. This will include a general medical history and any medication details. You will also be asked to describe the onset of symptoms and describe the tinnitus in detail. You will then explore the impact that your tinnitus has on your life and look at any other related life-stresses or anxieties.
After the assessment you will discuss the mechanisms of tinnitus and any related hearing loss. This includes the significance of sound, the selective filtering of the auditory system and the effects of stress, anxiety, thoughts and beliefs on this system. The whole process is centred around the individual.
You may also be asked to complete a self-management plan which will help coordinate the treatment.
What else can the hearing therapist help with?
The hearing therapist can help with acclimatisation to hearing aid use and optimising communication with tactics and strategies. Indeed, she is there to discuss and support you with any issues you have around your hearing or hearing loss.
How can I arrange an apointment?
This can be arranged via your GP or ENT consultant. You can also contact us direct and we will be pleased to discuss your needs with you.
